Saint-Égrève is a French commune situated in the département of Isère in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Positioned in the north-western part of the Grenoble conurbation close to the geographical centre of the département of Isère, the commune, situated in the urban area of Grenoble, has been a member of the métropole de Grenoble since the creation of what was still a communauté d'agglomération at the time. The A48, the RN 75, and the railway line all pass through the communal territory, thus giving the town of Saint-Égrève a certain strategic importance.
A little history
A watchtower post dating from the Gallo-Roman period and a Roman road built on corbels, cut into the cliff face, were discovered on the Néron, the mountain separating the territory of the commune of Saint-Égrève from the neighbouring commune of Saint-Martin-le-Vinoux. A series of archaeological excavations led by Hippolyte Müller enabled, during the 19th and 20th centuries, the uncovering of a cistern from the former watchtower and numerous artefacts. The quartier de la Monta is the oldest part of Saint-Égrève. It presents itself as an area slightly elevated above the plain, which allowed it to escape flooding from the Isère.
