Saint-Calais is a French commune situated in the département of Sarthe in the Pays de la Loire region, with a population of 2,948 inhabitants in 2022. Saint-Calais, considered the world capital of the chausson aux pommes, is a member of the communauté de communes des Vallées de la Braye et de l'Anille, of the Pays du Perche Sarthois (pays d'art et d'histoire) and holds the label Petites cités de caractère. The commune forms part of the historic province of Maine and is situated in the Haut-Maine.
A little history
Human settlement at Saint-Calais is not truly attested until the Gallo-Roman period, with the mention in texts of a villa, the villa Gajani. However, the founding of the town effectively took place in the 6th century. Carileph, a hermit and former monk at the abbaye Saint-Mesmin de Micy near Orléans, settled on the banks of the Anille, on the site of the Gallo-Roman villa, to found a religious community. The Merovingian king Childebert († 558, son of Clovis) granted him an estate which enabled the founding of an abbey, the monastère d'Anisole.
