Romenay, the town
Romenay covers 48.9 km², lies between 172 and 214 m above sea level and had 1,748 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Romenay (Roumené in Franco-Provençal Bressan) is a French commune located in the département of Saône-et-Loire, in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.
A little history
The oldest document in which Romenay appears is the donation made in the year 584 by the Burgundian king Gontran, who resided in Chalon and was a grandson of Clovis, to the église Saint-Vincent de Mâcon, the seat of the bishop of the time, a certain Nizier, who was subsequently canonised. From that distant period, the parish of Romenay thus belonged to the bishops of Mâcon, lords and barons of Romenay. The last of these was monseigneur Moreau, who was removed from office during the revolutionary period from 1789 to 1794. A magnificent portrait of monseigneur Moreau can be seen at the musée des Ursulines de Mâcon. The current town hall is housed in the former château de l'évêque.
