Rochechouart is a French commune located in the département of Haute-Vienne, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. A sub-prefecture, it is nonetheless only the 15th largest town in the département from a demographic point of view. Unlike the majority of communes in Haute-Vienne, it has historically been part of Poitou.
A little history
Until the Revolution, Rochechouart was administratively dependent on the province of Poitou (the viscounts of Rochechouart being vassals of the comte de Poitiers), and in religious terms, came under the diocese of Limoges. A book on the history of the Ville de Rochechouart and its name was published in November 2019, under the title Prestige de Rochechouart. It retraces the epic story of the oldest family in France after the royal family, still in existence today, and of their name. Rochechouart is one of those names known to all.
