Ribérac, the town
Ribérac covers 22.8 km², lies between 54 and 155 m above sea level and had 3,734 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Ribérac is a French commune situated in the département of Dordogne, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. A former sous-préfecture from 1801 to 1926, the commune was the chef-lieu of the canton of Ribérac, then in 2015 became its centralising office. It is the birthplace, in the 12th century, of one of the most celebrated troubadours, Arnaut Daniel.
A little history
On the communal territory, at la Gaudinie and at les Mazerets, traces of Gallo-Roman occupation have been discovered. In 848, following the Norman invasions, a defensive structure (a castellarium) was established near a ford on the Dronne on the initiative of the comte de Périgord et d'Angoumois. Around the year 1000, the lord of this castellarium, Alchier le Sourd, founded the château de Ribérac (Castellum Ribairac), on the heights of the hill where the current cemetery stands, near the former église Notre-Dame. The château de Ribérac was held successively by the houses of Turenne, Talleyrand, Bergerac, Pons, d'Aydie and Chapt.
