Puget-sur-Argens (pronounced [pyʒɛ syʁ aʁʒɑ̃]) is a French commune in the département of Var, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. A free Provençal village since the end of the 16th century, situated at the junction of the route nationale 7 and the autoroute A8, Puget-sur-Argens has seen its population increase fourfold over the last sixty years, and numerous businesses and large retail chains have set up in the south of the territory. Its inhabitants are known as the Pugétois and Pugétoises.
A little history
The first mention of Puget occurred in the year 940 when the Saracens razed what was then the villa Pogito. Driven out in 973 by Guillaume Ier de Provence, the latter, pious towards the end of his life, gave half of the estate to the bishop of Fréjus, Riculphe. In 1203, the bishop Raimond de Capella obtained from Alphonse II the entirety of the estate and the small fort situated on the peak, which then took the name of Castrum de Pogito. This was confirmed in 1235 by his son Raimond Bérenger.
