Provins (prononcé) is a French commune situated 77 km south-east of Paris, sub-prefecture of the département of Seine-et-Marne in the Île-de-France region. It is the chief town of the arrondissement and of the canton. Former capital of the comtes de Champagne, Provins has been listed since 13 December 2001 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
A little history
Traces of occupation bear witness to a human presence on the site as far back as the Palaeolithic. During the Gallo-Roman period, Provins was associated with two important regional routes, the road from Soissons to Troyes to the north, and the road towards Sens in the south-westerly direction. The part corresponding to the present-day ville haute is thought to have been transformed into a stronghold (castrum) under Roman occupation. In the year 485, following his victory at Soissons, Clovis seized the Roman castrum of Provins.
