A little history
It is very likely that the armies of General Hannibal Barca passed through Pontcharra to reach Italy in 218 BC, regardless of which mountain pass was used. The église de Villard-Benoît was chosen for the signing of a peace treaty, on 10 June 1314, between the comte de Savoie Amédée V and the dauphin de Viennois Jean II, under the auspices of the Archbishop of Tarentaise, Bertrand Ier de Bertrand, and the Bishop of Grenoble, Guillaume IV de Royn.
