Paray-Vieille-Poste covers 6.1 km², lies between 82 and 94 m above sea level and had 8,202 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Paray-Vieille-Poste (pronounced [paʁɛ viɛj pɔst̪]) is a French commune situated seventeen kilometres south of Paris in the département of Essonne in the Île-de-France region. A simple agricultural village, enhanced in the 17th century by a coaching inn on the edge of the route de Fontainebleau, the commune was not effectively urbanised until after the First World War with the establishment of an aerodrome by the US Air Force and subsequently by the Navy.
A little history
The area has been cultivated since the Neolithic period. A residential area existed from the 4th century at the lieu-dit La Croix Blanche. The first mention of the place dates from 1150, referring to the village of Paray, then in 1195 the lieu-dit Contin was mentioned, being possessions of the abbaye de Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the abbaye Sainte-Geneviève respectively. From the 1250s onwards, a mayor was appointed to represent the inhabitants before the clergy.
