Orsay (pronounced [ɔʁsɛ]) is a French commune situated in the département of Essonne in the Île-de-France region. A stronghold of the vallée de Chevreuse from the 8th century onwards, an agricultural village in the possession of influential and generous figures, Orsay developed in the second half of the 19th century with the arrival of the railway, today the RER B, two stations of which are situated in Orsay, and of donors who made possible the construction of a hospital centre that is still in operation today.
A little history
In 1993, the uncovering of Gallo-Roman remains from the 1st and 2nd centuries, including a residence, pottery, coins, glassware and tools, attested to the presence of inhabitants on the site. In 754, King Pépin le Bref gave the territory of the commune to the abbaye de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. In 993, the name of the village was mentioned in a manuscript by Eudes, a Benedictine monk of the abbaye de Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, recounting a bloody battle of Orsay between Bouchard I, known as le Vénérable, comte de Corbeil and de Melun, a loyalist of King Hugues Capet, and Eudes II de Blois de Chartres, who laid claim to the comté de Melun.
