A little history
The battle of Nouaillé-Maupertuis, in which Jean le Bon was defeated with an army of 12,000 men against the English forces of the Prince of Wales, took place on 19 September 1356. King Jean II Le Bon and his son were taken prisoner and many lords were killed or captured. It was during this battle that Philippe, the future duc de Bourgogne, is said to have uttered the famous phrase, « Père, gardez-vous à droite! Gardez-vous à gauche! ».
