Nontron est une commune française situated in the département de la Dordogne, in the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Chef-lieu of the canton de Nontron from 1790 to 2015 and of the arrondissement de Nontron, it is one of the three sub-prefectures of the département, which has four arrondissements. Since 2015, the commune has become the bureau centralisateur of the canton du Périgord vert nontronnais.
A little history
The town probably already existed 1,100 years before our era and was ravaged several times by invaders, the Saracens in the 7th century and the Normans in the 9th century. In the 8th century, the Gallo-Roman castrum was given by the vicomtes de Limoges to the Poitevin abbey de Charroux, with the vicomtes retaining significant rights there.
