Neuvic, the town
Neuvic covers 25.8 km², lies between 51 and 187 m above sea level and had 3,687 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Neuvic (official name), sometimes called Neuvic sur l'Isle, is a French commune situated in the département of Dordogne, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Chef-lieu of the canton de Neuvic from 1790 to 2015, the commune became at that date the centralising office of the canton de la Vallée de l'Isle.
A little history
The communal territory was occupied as early as the Neolithic period, as attested by the remains of the camps de Linceuil and de Puy-de-Pont, the latter also being occupied during the Gallo-Roman period. A first parish called Sanctus Petrus de Arce, situated near Puy-de-Pont, was pillaged by the Vikings. The name of the new settlement, Neuvic, does not appear until 1090. The fortress of Neuvic was a fief of the Talleyrand-Périgord until 1520.
