A little history
Around 1078 a charter makes the first written mention of the name of the commune. Navarrenx (Navarrensis et non sponda Navarrensis) is cited there five times. It concerns a perpetual agreement between Centulle V de Béarn known as the younger, viscount of Béarn and Oloron, count of Bigorre, and his vassal Raimond-Guillaume Ier known as Salamace, viscount of Soule. The latter was to present himself at Navarrenx to make amends for the wrongs done to the Béarnais by the Souletins.
