Naintré is a commune in the Centre-Ouest of France, situated in the southern suburbs of Châtellerault, in the département of Vienne in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It is the tenth largest town in Vienne.
A little history
From the Neolithic period there survives the menhir du Vieux Poitiers, made of yellowish sandstone, on which during the Gaulish period an inscription was carved. RAT[IO]N BRIVATIOM FRONTV. TARBEISONIOS IEVRV «Frontu, fils de Tarbeisu a offert le ratis (rempart ou levée de terre) des habitants de Briva.» Known since a very long time, it was mentioned for the first time in the 18th century by Dom Mazet of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Cyprien in Poitiers. The local place name les Raïtes, in the commune of Fressines in the Deux-Sèvres, which has never yet been explained, may perhaps be linked to this Gaulish word ratis.
