A little history
The town of Mortagne-au-Perche is built on the summit and on the slope of a hillside, at the foot of which flow the springs of the Chippe. Mortagne-au-Perche was, along with Bellême and Nogent-le-Rotrou, one of the capitals of the Perche and its history is closely linked to that of the comtes du Perche and to the incessant quarrels between the lords of Mortagne and those of Bellême. Very early on, the comtes built a fortress there, a motte-and-bailey castle, for in 997 it was burnt down by the king of the Franks, Robert II le Pieux, son of Hugues Capet. The fortress was rebuilt in the 12th century on the summit of the plateau and, at the beginning of the 13th century, took the name of fort Toussaint.
