Morestel covers 8 km², lies between 205 and 319 m above sea level and had 4,340 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Morestel is a French commune situated in the département of Isère, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and formerly attached to the old province of Dauphiné. An ancient medieval town encircled by ramparts, Morestel possesses a fairly rich cultural heritage, as evidenced by the presence of the current keep (dated to the 14th century) of its former château delphinal, restored during the 20th century. Its dominant position, as well as that of the bell tower of the parish church of Saint-Symphorien, built on a slight rise, allows the ancient medieval town to be identified as soon as one approaches the small settlement.
A little history
The region of Morestel lies in the western part of the ancient territory of the Allobroges, a group of Gaulish tribes occupying the former Savoie, as well as the part of Dauphiné situated to the north of the river Isère. After the decisive victory of the Romans of Fabius Maximus, the Allobroges were subjected to Roman rule, and their territory formed the first nucleus of the transalpine province Provincia ulterior (or Gallia ulterior), which included all the Gaulish peoples situated in the regions between the Rhône and the Alps. Before the fall of the Roman Empire, Morestel belonged to the Pagus Viennensis, which would later become the comitatus Viennensis.
