Montsoult [mɔ̃su] is a commune in Val-d'Oise situated on a hillside at the edge of the forêt de L'Isle-Adam, overlooking the plaine de France, and approximately 25 km north of Paris. Its inhabitants are known as the Montsoultois(es).
A little history
The name Montsoult probably derives from the Latin Monticelis, an alteration of Montis Cellariensis, meaning a mount relating to the monks' cellar, or perhaps from the anthroponym Monte-Ceodi, a knight of 1233.[citation nécessaire] The village is mentioned for the first time in a diploma of Charles le Chauve in 862.[citation nécessaire] Around 1275, the seigneury was divided between a branch of the family de Montmorency and the family La Queue. The two estates were united in 1744 by Geoffroy Macé Camus de Pontcarré, baron de Maffliers. The population stood at just over 400 inhabitants in the 19th century.
