Montpon-Ménestérol is a French commune situated in the département of Dordogne, in the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. From 1790 to 2015, the commune was the chef-lieu of the canton of Montpon-Ménestérol, then in 2015 it became its centralising office.
A little history
It was at Montpon that the war of Aquitaine between Waïfre, duc d'Aquitaine, and the Frankish king Pépin le Bref came to an end in 768. According to a tradition, on 2 June 768, at Montignac, on the commune of Montpon, Waïffre was assassinated. In 830 and in 849, the Vikings who travelled up the Isle ravaged Montpon. Attested in 1170, the château de Montpon was the seat of a châtellenie comprising eighteen parishes.
