Montmerle-sur-Saône is a French commune situated in the département of Ain in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and bordered by the Saône. It belongs to the unité urbaine de Belleville, to the north of the aire urbaine de Lyon. The inhabitants of Montmerle-sur-Saône are called the Montmerlois and the Montmerloises.
A little history
Montmerle was for a long time an inhabited place, as attested by the very numerous objects from the Neolithic period, the Bronze Age and the Gallo-Roman era found in the commune, notably at le Thiollet. The remains from the Gallo-Roman era suggest that Muntunulum, so named by Vercingétorix himself, was one of the last Gaulish villages to resist the Roman invader. Hence the nickname of "Gaulish heretics of the Alps" given to the inhabitants of Montmerle-sur-Saône. The town does not truly appear in history until the 11th century.
