Montignac-Lascaux, also known as Montignac (the official name until 2020) or Montignac-sur-Vézère, is a French commune situated on the Vézère, in the département of Dordogne, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Chef-lieu of the canton de Montignac from 1790 to 2015, the commune became at that date the centralising office of the canton de la Vallée de l'Homme. At the heart of the vallée de la Vézère, the grotte de Lascaux is its emblematic site, known the world over.
A little history
Human presence at Montignac is attested from the Palaeolithic period. The town has within its territory the prehistoric site of Lascaux and the deposit of Régourdou (Neanderthal man). The town enters recorded history with Roman colonisation. Two villas are attested, the villa des Olivoux (a lieu-dit of Chambon to the north of Montignac, studied archaeologically since 2005) and the villa de Brenac.
