Montchanin is a French commune situated in the département of Saône-et-Loire, in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The commune is situated at the heart of a significant coal basin exploited between the 1820s and 1912 by the houillères de Montchanin.
A little history
The village of les Brosses was part of the parish of Saint-Eusèbe, which was established as a commune by the French Revolution. The Compagnie des Houillères made repeated representations to have les Brosses elevated to the status of a commune. By an imperial decree of 31 May 1854, the hamlet became a commune under the name of Montchanin-les-Mines. A second decree, dated 5 February 1855, elevated the said commune to a parish on the proposals of the bishop of Autun and the prefect.
