A little history
Numerous remains (blades, scrapers, bifaces) prove that the site of Monein was already very frequented during the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods. Paul Raymond associated the town of Monein with the presumed Aquitanian people of the Monesi. This is in fact a misreading of the name of the Onesii (Pline le Jeune, book IV) of Bagnères-de-Luchon. He notes that Monein had a lay abbey as early as the 12th century, a vassal of the vicomté de Béarn.
