Monbazillac, the town
Monbazillac covers 19.6 km², lies between 46 and 188 m above sea level and had 829 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Monbazillac is a French commune situated in the département of Dordogne, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It has given its name to the homonymous sweet white wine.
A little history
The terroir of Mont-Bazaillac belonged to a Benedictine priory based in Bergerac from the 11th century onwards. The monks cleared the hillside to plant vines there, and this context encouraged the appearance of "noble rot" (botrytis cinerea), the cornerstone of the production of renowned sweet wines. In the Middle Ages, the vineyard grew in importance within the framework of the "vinée" around Bergerac. From 1495, new statutes authorised the integration of this terroir into the privileged area of the town, paving the way for the commercial development of these wines.
