Moirans [mwaʁɑ̃] is a French commune situated in the département of Isère, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The commune of Moirans also belongs to the communauté d'agglomération du Pays voironnais and to the canton de Tullins, at the northern outlet of the lower vallée de l'Isère, also known under the name of Sud Grésivaudan. An important staging town throughout the history of the region, this town is situated at the crossroads of former national roads, the RN85 and RN92, as well as close to the A48 and A49 motorways, both of which run alongside its territory, and whose shared access point is 4 km from the town centre.
A little history
During Antiquity, Moirans and its surrounding area was populated by the Allobroges, a Gaulish people whose territory lay between the Isère, the Rhône and the northern Alps. From 121 BC, this territory, named Allobrogie, was incorporated into the Roman province of Viennois, with the city of Vienne as its capital, which was also the seat of the former Roman diocese of Vienne. The locality of Morginum (cited under this name in the table de Peutinger) was established along the Roman road that ran from Italy to Vienne via the col de Montgenèvre and Grenoble, making Moirans a very active staging town. In 1016, the bishop of Grenoble, Humbert d'Albon, founded a church and a Benedictine priory.
