Sur le plan historique et culturel, la commune est dans le pays Montalbanais, un territoire aux confins des anciennes provinces du Rouergue, de la Guyenne et du Languedoc et correspondant à la partie méridionale du Bas Quercy. Exposée à un climat océanique altéré, elle est drainée par le Tarn, le ruisseau de Palmola, le Crève-Cor, le ruisseau de Lauzat et par divers autres petits cours d'eau.
