Milly-la-Forêt (pronounced [mi.ji la fɔ.ʁɛ]) is a French commune situated in the south-east of the département of Essonne in the Île-de-France region. It is the seat of the communauté de communes des 2 Vallées, of the parc naturel régional du Gâtinais français and of the doyenné de Milly-la-Forêt. A Gaulish village as early as 285 BC.
A little history
According to the local history written by dom Guillaume Morin, historiographer of the Gâtinais, the town of Milly is said to have been founded in the year 285 before Jesus Christ by Dryus, fourth king of the Gauls, as a centre of druidic initiation, as the menhir de la Pierre Droite bears witness today. In the era of Roman Gaul, the village stood on the Roman road, still marked today by the chemin de Grimery, Roman medals found in 1825 and a gold coin bearing the effigy of Faustin de Rome. In 52 before Jesus Christ, a Roman camp was established to the west of the river.
