Mézériat, the town

Mézériat covers 19.2 km², lies between 189 and 223 m above sea level and had 2,172 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Mézériat (pronunciation me.ze.rja) is a French commune in the département of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Belonging to the canton of Vonnas since 2015, the commune of the Mézériatis forms part of the Bresse savoyarde near the Dombes, between Mâcon and Bourg-en-Bresse.

A little history

The occupation of the territory is thought to date back to prehistoric man, as evidenced by poypes dating from the polished stone age. The village was mentioned as early as the 10th century, appearing as both a parish and a seigneury. In 1601, following the end of the Franco-Savoyard war, which concluded with the traité de Lyon, Mézériat became part of France when France acquired the Bresse, the Bugey, the Valromey and the pays de Gex. It was subsequently incorporated into the province of Burgundy.
