Meximieux is a French commune, situated in the département of Ain in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and belonging to the urban area of Lyon. Its inhabitants are known as the Meximiards and the Meximiardes.
A little history
In the Middle Ages, the town of Meximieux sheltered behind a curtain wall with circular flanking towers, of which some remains still survive. The town of Meximieux was a possession of the Archbishop of Lyon from 1072 to 1270, the date at which Meximieux passed into the hands of the seigneur de Beaujeu and then to the Dauphiné in 1327, and finally Meximieux became part of Savoie from 1353, a situation that lasted several centuries. During this prosperous period, it acquired a position as a border town with Pérouges. François (II) Mareschal, seigneur de Méximieux, obtained from the Duke of Savoy Charles III by letters patent of 14 August 1514 the right to raise Méximieux to the status of a barony.
