A little history
The site of the commune has been occupied since the Celtic period, as evidenced by archaeological discoveries made in the 20th century. The abbaye Notre-Dame-du-Val was founded nearby in 1125 by Cistercian monks. The hamlet of Mériel took shape, and kings and prelates, drawn by the abbey, would stop there. Since at least 1530, the village church has had Saint Éloi as its patron saint.
