Melay is a French commune situated in the département of Saône-et-Loire, in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is one of the six communes in the département of Saône-et-Loire situated on the left bank of the Loire (to the west of the river in this part of its course).
A little history
In the tradition of patronal festivals, Melay organises every year its now famous float parade on 15 August. This event attracts an ever-growing crowd, coming from the four corners of the region. In the night of 19 to 20 March 1943, a Lysander aircraft coming from England and piloted by Flight Lieutenant John Bridger DFC landed. It was dropping off three great French resistance members, Jean Moulin, unifier of the Résistance, General Delestraint, head of the Armée secrète, and Christian Pineau, head of the network « Phalanx ».
