Mayenne (prononcé) is a commune in the west of France, situated in the north-west of the Pays de la Loire region. It is one of the two sub-prefectures of the département of Mayenne. The third most populous commune in the département, it had 12,883 inhabitants in 2023.
A little history
The town of Mayenne did not appear until the Middle Ages, but a Roman road linking Jublains to Vieux, near Caen, passed through the north of the commune, at the lieu-dit of Brives. At that point, a ford made it possible to cross the Mayenne. Furthermore, in the Gaulish era, the people of the Aulerques Diablintes had their capital at Moulay, to the south of the town, where the remains of a large oppidum are to be found. Moulay was abandoned after the Roman conquest, and the Romans built a new town at Jublains, a few kilometres further to the east.
