Laval is a town in the West of France, the principal town of the département of Mayenne in the Pays de la Loire region. It is situated approximately 300 kilometres to the west of Paris. It has 49,400 inhabitants as of 2023.
A little history
Before the construction of the château in the 11th century, Laval did not exist. Nevertheless, the site was already a place of passage as it was situated on a Roman road linking Le Mans to Corseul, the Gallo-Roman capital of the Coriosolites and today situated in the Côtes-d'Armor. Furthermore, parts of the current territory of the commune show traces of ancient occupation, such as the chapelle Notre-Dame de Pritz, situated on the banks of the Mayenne on the northern boundary of Laval and mentioned as early as 710. A Gaulish stele was also discovered there.
