A little history
The chapel of Saint-Jean-de-Berraute is recorded as far back as 1220. It formed part of the hospitaller commandery managed by the Hospitaliers de l'ordre de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem. This commandery provided shelter for pilgrims travelling to Saint-Jacques who came from Oloron via l'Hôpital Saint-Blaise and made their way through Ordiarp towards Ostabat. It became a parish church with the growth of the village.
