The commune, located in the south of the natural region of Brionnais, is known for its weekly market created in 1266, which takes place every Monday morning. By road, the town is located between the towns of Paray-le-Monial, 21 kilometres to the north, and Roanne, 27 kilometres to the south.
A little history
The history of Marcigny has been rich since antiquity, the site having been a favoured thoroughfare. It was nicknamed Marcigny-les-Nonnains on account of the priory of women of the order of Saint-Benoit. Before the arrival of the Romans, the commune's territory was covered by a thick, marshy forest that served as a refuge for wolves and wild boar. On the heights of the surrounding area, traces have been found indicating the existence of several villages of Celtic hunters or farmers.
