Longpont-sur-Orge (pronounced [lɔ̃pɔ̃ syʁ ɔʁʒ]) is a French commune situated twenty-five kilometres south-west of Paris in the département of l'Essonne in the Île-de-France region. It is the seat of the doyenné de Montlhéry-Longpont. A place of European interest on account of its former priory at the origin of the town, a stop on the routes of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle with its famous basilique Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Garde containing the most important reliquary in France, Longpont-sur-Orge is part of the fédération des sites clunisiens.
A little history
During the Neolithic period, several fords on the great rivers that would later become the Orge and the Boële were doubtless an important point of migration for reindeer, attracting hunters. From the rond-point de la Croix Rouge Fer, the view stretches very far, and one can easily picture the lookouts of that era. Evidence of this survives today in the lieu-dit Guiperreux, a phonetic alteration of gué-pierreux. At that spot there once stood a temple to Mercury, of which a few stones remain, built no doubt upon an ancient Gaulish sanctuary.
