Lhuis is a French commune situated in the département of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is the chief town of a canton of Ain. Its inhabitants are called the Lhuisards.
A little history
It is difficult to define the exact origins of the village, however ancient remains, which can be found in the church, indicate that the site was occupied during the Gallo-Roman period. A Latin inscription giving thanks to the mother goddesses (Matrae sacrae) appears to indicate the existence of an ancient fanum. A stele decorated with a solar disc (on the exterior of the building) is a reminder of the solar cult of Apollo or that of the Gaulish god Taranis, associated with Jupiter. The large blocks of white stone on the façade of the church are a probable reuse of materials from the Gallo-Roman sanctuary. In the Middle Ages, the village formed part of the lands of the lords of la Tour du Pin.
