Lévignac, the town
Lévignac covers 12.2 km², lies between 123 and 235 m above sea level and had 2,206 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Lévignac (also unofficially known as Lévignac-sur-Save) is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the pays de Rivière-Verdun, a small electoral pays in the east of Gascogne, set apart from the main communication routes, and spread across the terraces of the left bank of the Garonne, between the vallée de la Save and the Lomagne, extending into Gascogne toulousaine. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Save, the ruisseau de Cérès and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Although official documents are available that trace the history of this village in greater detail, it came into being owing to its proximity to the Save and its geographical situation, not far from the forêt de Bouconne. It is known for the knight Jean-Baptiste Dubarry, lover of Madame du Barry, as well as Louis XV. In this village there is a renovated château that stands as a trace of this turbulent episode. The château de la Dubarry (or du Barry), following her liaison with Louis XV, belonged to Gaston Monnerville, president of the Senate of the Fourth Republic.
