A little history
The canons of Saint-Ruf, whose order has been established since 1039 in Avignon, founded a first Romanesque church. In 1208, a papal bull from Innocent III ratified the donation of Les Vans to the abbaye de Saint-Gilles-du-Gard. From the 14th century to the 18th century inclusive, a barri surrounded the town. This "mur de ville" was several metres high and sixty to eighty centimetres wide. It was doubled by a ditch or stream that occasionally ran alongside the houses.
