La commune, qui partage avec sa voisine, la commune d'Entre-deux-Guiers, la confluence du Guiers vif et du Guiers mort, se situe à mi-chemin des agglomérations de Grenoble et Chambéry. Celle-ci fut jusqu'en 1860, année de rattachement de la Savoie à la France, une ville frontière marquant la limite entre la France et le royaume de Sardaigne, le pont sur le Guiers vif marquant la frontière entre les deux pays.
