A little history
The discovery in the village of Châtelard of a necropolis of the Chamblande type, contemporary with the culture of Cortaillod, confirms the presence of humans as early as the Middle Neolithic in the valley. The town was situated on the Roman road Alpis Graia which led from Milan to Vienne by way of the col du Petit-Saint-Bernard, on the bank of a small stream, the Bergintra today known as the Charbonnet, which gave it its ancient name of Bergintrum. The interest of this locality lay in its salt mine at the Roc d'Arbonne, supplying in particular the Val d'Aoste.
