Albertville is a French commune situated in the département of Savoie in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The town takes its name from Charles-Albert de Savoie-Carignan, King of Piedmont-Sardinia and founder of the town in the first half of the 19th century. Situated in the heart of the Alps, the commune lies at the confluence of the Isère and its tributary the Arly, also marking the junction of the valleys of the Tarentaise, the Beaufortain and the val d'Arly, upstream of the combe de Savoie.
A little history
In Roman times, the hilltop settlement formed an important point on the Milan-Vienne road. Situated at the confluence of the Arly and the Isère, the Romans named the settlement "ad confluentes", from which its name derives. The plain was occupied by customs officers and constituted the frontier post of "ad publicanos" (from the Latin publicanus, the tax farmer, here the customs officer). At the end of the 12th century, the Hospitaliers de l'ordre de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem founded a hospice to receive travellers and pilgrims.
