Le Lavandou [lə lavɑ̃du] (in Provençal, Lou Lavandou or Lo Lavandor) is a commune in the département of Var, in the région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, on the shores of the Mediterranean facing the Îles d'Or (île du Levant, Port-Cros and île de Bagaud) and at the foot of the massif des Maures. It was created in 1913 following the division of the commune of Bormes-les-Mimosas, which borders it to the west. Hyères is 22 km to the west and Cavalaire is 20 km to the east, by road.
A little history
At Font-Freye, on 10 September 2006, a late Neolithic settlement was discovered by X. Dupont, heavily damaged by ploughing. Five hearths were uncovered in the eastern part, with areas of dense charcoal, reddened earth and heated pebbles. Items found included heated pebbles, saddle querns, grinders, polished axes, lithic tools, points, blades and bladelets.
