Le Grand-Lemps (pronounced [ləgrɑ̃-lɛ̃s]) is a French commune situated in the département de l'Isère, in the région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The commune, formerly situated in the province of Dauphiné, is the chef-lieu of the canton du Grand-Lemps. It is also a member of the communauté de communes de Bièvre Est, whose headquarters are situated in the neighbouring commune of Colombe.
A little history
The current area of the commune of Le Grand-Lemps lies to the west of the ancient territory of the Allobroges, a group of Gaulish tribes occupying the former Savoie, as well as the part of Dauphiné situated to the north of the river Isère. Barbarians, the Burgundians, came to disturb this period of calm. In 486, Clovis founded the kingdom of the Franks who, following the victory of Vézeronce in 524, became the masters of the region. Then came the fragmentation of the land, in the 6th century, between the invaders, and the beginning of feudalism.
