Le Castellet (pronounced in French, [lə kastəlɛ], Lo Castelet in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the département of Var in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Its inhabitants are known as Castellans and Castellanes. The commune holds the label of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.
A little history
On 4 April 1402, at Brantes, at the foot of the Ventoux, in the presence of his wife Alix des Baux, Odon de Villars made a donation to his nephew Philippe de Lévis of the fiefs of Brantes, Plaisians and their dependencies, the seigneuries of Saint-Marcel, Roquefort, le Castellet, Cassis and Port-Miou, dependent on the baronnie d'Aubagne, as well as La Fare-les-Oliviers and Éguilles. His nephew, in return, was required to act as guarantor on his behalf towards Raymond de Turenne in the observance of an agreement made between the viscount, himself and his wife Alix. In the event of non-compliance on the part of Alix and Odon, the latter would be required to pay 50,000 florins to Raymond de Turenne.
