Lassay-les-Châteaux is a French commune, situated in the département of Mayenne in the Pays de la Loire region, with a population of 2,247 inhabitants. The commune forms part of the historic province of Maine, and is located in Bas-Maine in the pays de Passais. Melleray, however, absorbed by Lassay in 1972, is historically in both Normandie and Maine in the pays de Passais.
A little history
The first inhabitant of Lassay was the hermit Fraimbault (Frambaldus de Laceio, lance-bearer), originally from Auvergne, in the 6th century. Sent by Saint Innocent, bishop of Le Mans, he came to establish a hermitage at the lieu-dit Saint-Fraimbault, formerly the parish church of the area. He is connected to other hermits, namely saint Bomer, saint Ernier and saint Ortaire. René Bansard and the team from the CENA at the université de Caen have demonstrated that his character and his vita served as a model in the 12th and 13th centuries for the creation of the literary character of Lancelot du Lac, knight of King Arthur.
