La Roche-Chalais is a French commune situated in the département of Dordogne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is one of the most extensive communes in the département. From 1790 to 1801, the commune was the chief town of the canton de Laroche Chalais.
A little history
In the 1st century BC, the legions of César invaded the Périgord, which was at the time covered by the immense forest, the Sylva Edobola mentioned in the Commentaires of César. They opened the first communication routes. In the 7th century, the Saracens coming from the south made their way up the valley of the Dronne, pillaging as they went. Charles Martel and the duc d'Aquitaine halted the Moors at Poitiers in 732. The Frankish prince then sought to seize Aquitaine. A long war followed, which would see the death of Waïfre, duc d'Aquitaine, and the annexation of the province to the royal domain.
