During the medieval period, the existence of several fortified houses is recorded, including that of the seigneur de La Motte, described in 1339 as « habet infra villam dominus de mota domum fortem ». There was also that of Lancelot de Clermont, described in 1363 as « quadam turrim cum domo bassa viridarium grangiam et aliis platheis et pertinentiis suis site infra villam de mura ». A further one was described in 1366 as « unam suam domum fortem cum suo tenemento et curtilagio site infra villam de mura in castro justam domum fortem nobilis petrus beymundi et juxtam terram berthoni genpanis et juxtam domum fortem nobilis Remundus aynardi ».
