The emperor Constantin, on his way to wage war against his brother-in-law Maxence in 312 AD, is said to have had, during a halt at the place where the village would later be founded, a vision of a cross in the sky bearing the sign « in hoc signo vinces » (by this sign, thou shalt conquer). This legend remains firmly anchored in the memory of the Croisiens. No proof of its veracity has ever been put forward, and doubt persists all the more given that the roads in the region at the time were ill-suited to the passage of legions that had at their disposal the voie Aurélienne (N 7), which was far more practicable.
