La Crau is a French commune situated in the département of Var in the région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It forms part of the eastern section of the Toulon conurbation, inland from the seaside resorts of Hyères and Carqueiranne.
A little history
From a very early period, the plain of La Crau was frequented by Neolithic hunters, who tracked game across a wetland traversed by the Gapeau. They occupied the rock shelters of the massif du Fenouillet and the foothills of the Maurettes and the Maures. The Romans developed the plain, which was crossed by an important Roman road that forded the Gapeau on a bridge now lost, near Notre-Dame. The Roman villas were prosperous and produced olive oil in particular. Potters' kilns manufactured amphorae and a fine local pottery.
